Constantine Bay Cornwall is an original oil painting inspired by the beautiful beach in North Cornwall. Constantine Bay beach offers a sweeping arc of gently shelving soft pale sands as well as an abundance of rock pools to explore.

Named after Saint Constantine, a 6th-century Cornish saint, this wide sandy beach is separated from its neighbour, Booby’s Bay, to the north, by a thin rocky point, whilst Constantine Bay is bordered by a large rocky reef to the south and backed by a network of sand dunes.

Although popular for swimming and paddling, this west-facing beach has strong rips, so caution is advised for swimmers. Constantine is a very popular surf spot producing top quality waves in the North Cornwall area. It has a reef at the southern end of the bay that works through the tide, depending on swell size, that produces lefts running into the bay. However, the wave can be fickle depending on swell direction. In the middle of the bay at high tide is a good peak producing rights and lefts with fast and sucky waves. There is also a point at the north end of the bay that produces good waves from mid to high tide.

I aim to capture both the tranquility of the shoreline and power of the ocean. Showing large ocean waves crashing onto the rocky shore. Each wave painting is designed to bring the atmosphere and calm of the ocean embracing the coast.

There’s something special about an original painting from the brushstrokes, texture and layers of colour to its’ own uniqueness. Art allows us to get in touch with our emotions. Whether triggering a great memory and reminding us of a captivating place, or evoking the power of the oceans.

For my work I like to use oil paint. This medium is very versatile allowing you to add thick impasto layers or more fluid translucent ones. As a result this medium is very useful when you want to capture ocean waves in all their forms and variety of colours. Also it is such robust a medium I can scrape the paint back or scratch into it too for added texture.

I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 2008 at the University of Plymouth. I have exhibited my paintings throughout Devon and gained an award at the Exeter Short Film festival. My films and photographs have been exhibited on the South Bank, London and in Italy. I am a Geopark Ambassador Artist for the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark.
