Fistral Beach Waves is inspired by the famous beach in Newquay looking north towards Towan Head in the distance. The painting shows rolling waves breaking onto the beach in Fistral Bay. Situated on the north coast of Cornwall half-a-mile west of Newquay town centre, Fistral Bay is bounded by two promontories, Towan Head to the north and Pentire Point East to the south.
Fistral Beach is Newquay’s iconic beach, quite simply one of the most consistent and best surfing beaches in the UK and Europe. This beautiful beach is west facing, long and sandy and backed by rocks and cliffs. Fistral hosts many festivals and events including Boardmasters – Europes largest surf and skate festival usually held in August. The UK ZapCat championships in April and August. The English National Surfing Champoinship, Night Surf and the King of the Groms Junior surf Festival.
I am an oil painter inspired by the energy of the seas. Studying film and fine art at the University of Plymouth has the way I paint. It is important to me to include a sense of movement and escapism in my work. Having moved permanently to Devon 18 years ago,it is the Devon and Cornwall coastline that still inspires me.
My seascape series of paintings have evolved over the years. I am keen to explore the force of the ocean, the light coming through the waves and the ever changing colour of the sea.For my work I like to use oil paint. This medium is very versatile allowing you to add thick impasto layers or more fluid translucent ones. This is perfect when you want to capture ocean waves in all their forms and variety of colours. Also it is such robust a medium I can scrape the paint back or scratch into it too.
I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 2008 at the University of Plymouth. I have exhibited my paintings throughout Devon and gained an award at the Exeter Short Film festival. My films and photographs have been exhibited on the South Bank, London and in Italy. I am a Geopark Ambassador Artist for the
