“Jurassic Wave” is inspired by the Jurassic coastline of Devon. It shows a large sea green wave cresting, lit by the sun turning the wave emerald green. The time of day is key here. It is very late afternoon, the light is fading fast. The highlights become a mixture of emeralds and blues contrasting with the deep blue of the sea. The background shows steep Jurassic cliffs; highlighting the typical Devon colours of burnt sienna, golden brown and deep reddish hues often found in this region of the South West Coastline.
The Jurassic Coast in Devon runs from Exmouth to Lyme Regis in Dorset and is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its outstanding historical significance. This unspoilt stretch of coastline reveals a unique geological portrait of 185 million years of the Earth’s history sequentially exposed in dramatic cliffs, secluded caves, coastal stacks and barrier beaches.
I like to work in oils because of their versatility. You can layer the paint so that it has a translucency. It is so robust a medium I can scrape the paint back or scratch into it too. This is another in my series of wave paintings which I started 5 years ago and numbering 48.
I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 2008 at the University of Plymouth. My exhibitions have been throughout Devon and one of my films was been exhibited at the South Bank, London and in Italy. I am a Teignmouth based artist.
In conclusion, I am a member of the Devon Artist Network where you can see more of my work here https://www.devonartistnetwork.co.uk/catherine-kennedy-1
Recently I have been given the status of a Geopark Ambassador Artist for the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark.
