Ocean Beach V is inspired by the coastline of South Devon and Cornwall. It shows a large wave cresting, lit by the sun turning the water turquoise and emerald green. The time of day is key here. It is midday the wave is lit a bright sun and the sky is cerulean blue. The highlights in the painting are mixture of turquoise blue contrasting deep marine and indigo blue sea. The foreground shows sea-foam rising up and under the wave. The large beach stretches off into the distance.
For my I use oil paint. I like to work in this medium because of it’s versatility. It allows you to add thick impasto layers of more fluid translucent layers, which is great when you want to capture ocean waves and all their forms and variety of colour. Also it is such robust a medium I can scrape the paint back or scratch into it too. This is another in my series of wave paintings.
