Perranporth Beach II is inspired the famous beach at Perranporth. This is one of my favourite beaches in to visit and is one of Cornwall’s best known and most popular beaches. Boasting an enormous expanse of golden sand, great surf and all the offerings you would expect from a seaside resort – including a pub literally on the beach – the Watering Hole.
The beaches of Perran Sands, Penhale Sands and Perranporth combine at low tide to form a stretch of sand reaching north from Perranporth to Ligger Point, the other side of which is Holywell Bay. Perran Sands Beach is a popular surfing venue, and a good family beach.
This painting shows several waves in the far distance breaking onto the pale yellow sandy beach. Looking north towards Ligger point and the sand dunes which extend nearly a mile inland.
I am an oil painter inspired by the energy of the seas. Studying film and fine art at the University of Plymouth has influenced the way I paint. It is important to me to include a sense of movement and escapism in my work. Having moved permanently to Devon 17 years ago, it is the Devon and Cornwall coastline that still inspire me today.
My seascape series of paintings have evolved over the years. I am keen to explore the force of the ocean, the light coming through the waves and the ever changing colour of the sea.
For my work I like to use oil paint. This medium is very versatile allowing you to add thick impasto layers or more fluid translucent ones. As a result this medium is very useful when you want to capture ocean waves in all their forms and variety of colours. Also it is such robust a medium I can scrape the paint back or scratch into it too for added texture.
I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 2008 at the University of Plymouth. I have exhibited my paintings throughout Devon and gained an award at the Exeter Short Film festival. My films and photographs have been exhibited on the South Bank, London and in Italy. I am a Geopark Ambassador Artist for the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark.
