‘Porthcurno Surf’ Original oil on canvas painting. Width 122cm x Height 61cm or 48 x 24 inches. Signed. Unframed. With a certificate of authenticity.
‘Porthcurno Surf’ is inspired Porthcurno beach which has some of the most photogenic waves in Cornwall. Heaving top to bottom turquoise barrels with the headland of Terryn Dinas as a backdrop. On a good today Porthcurno produces extremely heavy hollow waves.
Described by some as being a paradise, Porthcurno Beach, located in the far west of Cornwall has won many awards. With gorgeous fine soft white sand washed by a sea that turns turquoise in the sun and high cliffs on both sides providing shelter, it’s an oasis of stunning natural beauty.
The large beach, popular with families, has a stream that flows down one side which is great for kids to paddle in and up on the cliffs is the internationally renowned Minack Theatre, built in the 1920s by theatrical visionary Rowena Wade and her faithful gardener, which you can visit all year round.
This painting shows a large wave crashing onto a Porthcurno beach, lit by the sun turning the water several shades of green and blue/grey. The time of day is key here. It is midday the waves are is lit a winter sun. The highlights in the painting are mixture of emerald green and blue grey contrasting pale green sea. The foreground shows sea-foam rising up and under the wave and foam crashing onto the sandy beach.
I like to work in oils because of their versatility. You can layer the paint so that it has a translucency. Also It is so robust a medium I can scrape the paint back or scratch into it too. This is another in my series of wave paintings which I started 5 years ago and numbering 50.
