“Stormy Seas” is one of the wave painting series I started 5 years ago. This has evolved into a collection of 50 paintings so far. Inspired by the colour of the sea in Cornwall. I love the way light coming through a breaking wave turns the water turquoise.
I have tried to invoke an immersive feeling to my paintings. The sea is an ever-changing element that I find fascinating. Light hitting the water makes it’s colours change rapidly from a deep blue/black to a pale green almost white.
The versatility of oil paint makes it an ideal medium to work with. I can layer the paint in glazes to give translucency to a painting. In addition, it is such robust a medium that I can scrape the paint back and scratch into it too.
Being based in Teignmouth means I am close to the south west coastline and Dartmoor which influences my work. I often return to the work of Kurt Jackson and Peter Doig for inspiration and a sense of place.
I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 2008 at the University of Plymouth. My paintings have been exhibited throughout Devon and I gained an award at the Exeter Short Film festival.
