Treyarnon Beach is inspired by the lovely clean north-west facing sandy cove at Treyarnon Bay in Cornwall. The beach is surrounded by low cliffs and backed by sand dunes. It is a popular family beach with an expanse of fine sand at low water.
To the north is Treyarnon Point and the south, Trethias Island, both of which provide some shelter. It is one of the most popular beaches in the area, especially with families because the expanse of soft sands and low waters. It was recommended in the Marine Conservation Society Good Beach Guide in 2014 as one of the best family beaches in the Padstow area.
There are lots of sand and rock pools stretching round one side of the beach which are ideal for children to explore. These rockpools are teeming with life such as shrimps, crabs and small fish. There is even a natural “swimming pool” within the rocks to the north of the beach.
Inspiration
I am an oil painter inspired by the energy of the seas. Studying film and fine art at the University of Plymouth has influenced the way I paint. It is important to me to include a sense of movement and escapism in my work. Having moved permanently to Devon 17 years ago, it is the Devon and Cornwall coastline that still inspire me. My seascape series of paintings have evolved over the years. I am keen to explore the force of the ocean, the light coming through the waves and the ever changing colour of the sea.
For my work I like to use oil paint. This medium is very versatile allowing you to add thick impasto layers or more fluid translucent ones. As a result this medium is ideal when you want to capture ocean waves in all their forms and variety of colours. Also it is such robust a medium I can scrape the paint back or scratch into it too for added texture.
I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 2008 at the University of Plymouth. I have exhibited my paintings throughout Devon and gained an award at the Exeter Short Film festival. My films and photographs have been exhibited on the South Bank, London and in Italy. I am a Geopark Ambassador Artist for the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark.
