Turquoise Ocean Wave III
Original oil on canvas painting measuring Width 24.5 x Height 36.5 ins or 62 x 92 cm. Signed. With a certificate of authenticity. Framed in a white washed wooden frame finished with wax. Ready to hang.
Turquoise Ocean Wave III is inspired by the surfing waves of the North Cornwall coastline. It shows a turquoise large wave cresting lit by the sun. The painting has a rich textured surface which brings out the movement and depth of the wave. The sunlight is coming through the barrel of the wave turning the sea a pale turquoise.
Using many shades of turquoise blue to create this wave painting. The highlights are a very pale yellow merging into white and the shadows are a deep indigo blue painting. The texture is built up with many layers of paint, both translucent and opaque. I hope to make the view feel immersed in the image as though they were there.
I like to paint in oils because of their flexibility to alter the image whilst working and their depth of field achieved with the layering of paint. This painting has a lot of pallet knife work to give texture to the wave, as well as using brush work for the centre of the wave. Most of my work is inspired by the sea with its ever changing shapes and hues.
I am a Teignmouth based artist and live close to the ocean and Dartmoor. This proximity to the South West Coast and the wild untamed landscape of the moor has influenced my recent work.
I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 2008 at the University of Plymouth.
I have exhibited my paintings throughout Devon and gained an award at the Exeter Short Film festival. My films and photographs have been exhibited on the South Bank, London and in Italy.
In conclusion, I am a member of the Devon Artist Network where you can see more of my work here https://www.devonartistnetwork.co.uk/catherine-kennedy-1 Recently I have been given the status of a Geopark Ambassador Artist for the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark.
