Turquoise Waves IV is inspired by the coastline of South Devon and Cornwall and holidays to the Mediterranean where the clear turquoise waters gleam in the warm sunshine. This painting shows a large wave breaking, lit by the sun turning the water several shades of turquoise and emerald green. The time of day is key here. It is midday the waves are by the strong sunlight. The highlights in the painting are mixture of pale yellow green with deep blue green in the shadows contrasting with a cerulean blue sky. The foreground shows sea-foam rising up and under the waves with more foam washing up onto a sandy beach.
For my I use oil paint. I like to work in this medium because of it’s versatility. It allows you to add thick impasto layers of more fluid translucent layers, which is great when you want to capture ocean waves and all their forms and variety of colour. Also it is such robust a medium I can scrape the paint back or scratch into it too. This is another in my series of wave paintings.
